The Threads of Change Exhibit was a voyage of evolution and textiles.
Meet the innovators :
Sandy Sawatzky's The Black Gold Tapestry is a 69-meter length "film on TV" about humanity. The entire project took 9 years to create. Each pictograph was hand-embroidered and tells a story with every stitch. Sandy is a Canadian artist and former writer, producer, and director. Other designs created by her include The Age of Uncertainty and Back to the Garden.
Nathalie Miebach's designs merge art and scientific data creating 3-dimensional masterpieces. The MODA Threads of Change exhibition is currently showcasing the Chutes and Laddes, Singing Sailors, 3 Cranes, and Restless on display. Nathalie was inspired by environmental phenomena when building each piece. Nathalie is a Boston, MA-based artist who takes a strategic approach to her research before creating.
Christine Wertheim & Margaret Wertheim of the Institute For Figuring are incorporated in the Core Collection of the Crochet Coral Reef. This work of art presents a global community exercise of mathematics and the evolutionary theory of climate change. The Crochet Coral Reef expresses a zealous reaction. Margaret Wertheim is an internationally known science writer artist and author. Christine Wertheim is a poet, performer, artist, author, critic, curator and collaborator. Both Christine and Margaret are co-founders of the Institute For Figuring (IFF), an organization where projects to engage audiences and created with the aesthetic dimensions of science and mathematics. The contributors of this piece include a group of imaginative women from across the world like professional scientists, mathematicians, computer programmers, teachers, librarians, home-makers, costume designers, geologists, nurses, sheep farmers, and the mysterious “Dr Axt.”
Adrian Baker's Net-Work presentation is an ongoing collaborative art project. The yarn design represents connection and communication. The 300+ thread count is a depiction of the underground web of mycorrhizal fungi enabling trees to talk and recognize human connection with one another with nature is essential to our survival. Adrian is an exceptional artist and art instructor.
Bonnie Peterson's geoscience embroideries raise awareness of environmental issues. Her quilted work is inspired by climate change, social issues, and geological issues and she uses scientific data to translate each message. Bonnie is an artist who turned her textiles into novels.
The Tempestry Project is a hand-crafted invention by the Knit Wits from North Decatur Presbyterian Church. The collaborative design features data from fiber art and environmental education. The goal of the art is to create a bridge between global climate and our own experiences through knitted, crocheted, and woven temperature tapestries.
